When young kids are beginning to write they need LOTS of encouragement! The job of putting their thoughts down
onto paper is overwhelming. They have to remember what they want to say, figure out the letters to use, form those letters
correctly and in the right order, and remember how to read it back again. The more time children spend writing, the
better their writing will be- so encourage your child to write!
Remember, your writing time should be about encouraging your child to write words and sentences that are meaningful,
not about correct handwriting or proper spelling. We care more about what is said than the technical process
of how it is written down. Encourage your child to be creative in what they write about and to try something new instead
of writing the same "safe" sentences over and over.

We're not looking for perfect adult writing- we want kids to write like kids! That means letting them write down
the letters that they hear in a word, not the ones that we know should be there. Encourage your child to say
the word out loud and stretched out ("cat" becomes "c-a-a-a-a-t-t-t"). As they say the word, have them think about which
letter sounds they heard. Please resist the urge to say the word for them- they have to learn to do it on their own!
After your child writes the word, have them read it back to you to help them remember what they wrote. And don't forget
to praise them for the letters they discovered!
