During our unit on insects, we started an author study of Eric Carle and read his books about insects (The Grouchy
Ladybug, The Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Busy Spider).
We are studying problem/solution stories during Writing Workshop, so we combined the two ideas and wrote a story about
an insect that had a problem and a solution.
We also studied the illustrations in the Eric Carle books and found that he made them by painting tissue paper and cutting
and gluing it into a collage. We saw his short videos on his website, and decided to try it for ourselves. We
spent two days painting and writing, and another two days finishing our stories and cutting our pieces to assemble into the
shape of our insects. The results looked great! Check out our stories below.
